A Chorus of Horizontals (excerpt)

Maureen Seaton

Los Pjaros Anidan
Wherever you go those geese follow, slick Harpies, as if you're
their star, their hunger. They all point to you. You believe this

and it keeps you alive through winter after winter when,
     missing them,
you go down to the steely Chicago at the end of your ice-encrusted
impossible street and throw bread upon the water.
