Matthew Zapruder
 is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently Come On All You Ghosts, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and Sun Bear, 2014. Why Poetry, a book of prose, is forthcoming from Ecco Press in 2016. An Associate Professor in the St. Mary's College of California MFA program and English Department, he is also Editor at Large at Wave Books. He lives in Oakland, CA.

BECOMING ANOTHER: 
POEMS, MASKS, AND RITUAL DANCE / POETRY SERIES



Poets Morgan Parker, Robyn Schiff, Stephen Motika, Patricia Smith, Safia Elhillo, and Poetry Society of America's Executive Director Alice Quinn read poems composed in response to masks from the Rubin Museum's exhibition Becoming Another. Tibetan monks will perform a ritual masked dance called cham between readings. Attendees will each receive a chap book of mask images and related poems written by the featured poets, as well as Tarfia Faizullah, Fady Joudah, Richard Siken, Atsuro Riley, and Brenda Shaughnessy.

The evening will be followed by a tour of Becoming Another: the Power of Masks led by Dominique Townsend, Assistant Director of Interpretation and Engagement.

THE POETRY SOCIETY READINGS AT MCNALLY JACKSON
with Cate Marvin & Robin Beth Schaer

 


Cate Marvin's third book of poems, Oracle, was released by Norton this year. A 2015 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, she is a professor of creative writing at the College of Staten Island.

Robin Beth Schaer is the author of the poetry collection Shipbreaking (Anhinga 2015). She has received fellowships from Yaddo, Djerassi, Saltonstall, and VCCA. She teaches writing in New York City and worked as a deckhand aboard the Tall Ship Bounty, a 180-foot ship lost in Hurricane Sandy.

THE PSA READINGS AT BOOKCOURT
with Rachel McKibbens, Hieu Minh Nguyen, and Casey Lynn Rocheteau

  

Rachel McKibbens is a two-time New York Foundation for the Arts poetry fellow and author of the poetry collections, Into the Dark & Emptying Field (2013) and Pink Elephant (2009), as well as the chapbook MAMMOTH (2013). 

Hieu Minh Nguyen's is a Kundiman fellow, and his debut collection of poetry, This Way to the Sugar (Write Bloody Publishing, 2014), was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award, as well as a Lambda Literary Award. He is currently living in Minneapolis.

Casey Lynn Rocheteau's debut collection of poetry Knocked Up On Yes, was released by Sargent Press in 2012 and her second collection of poetry will be published by Sibling Rivalry Press in early 2016.

A TRIBUTE TO THE POET AI 



In light of the poet's unexpected passing in 2010 and in celebration of her Collected Poems (Norton, 2012), the PSA has teamed up with the Academy of American Poets, Cave Canem Foundation, Graduate Center for the Humanities, CUNY, Kundiman, and Poets House to present this memorial tribute. Nine distinguished contemporary poets—Timothy Donnelly, Rigoberto González, Joy Harjo, Tyehimba Jess, Patricia Spears Jones, Yusef Komunyakaa, Timothy Liu, Sapphire, and Susan Wheeler—will read from Ai's work, and House of Cards actor Eisa Davis will perform a selection of Ai's well-known dramatic monologues.
